The Light Keeper
Wishes aren't all they're cracked up to be... especially when you have to capture the Fairies who grant them to you.
Er... make that faeries... and not the normal, hiding-in-plain-sight magical kind.
When a misadventure cleaning out the attic leads Isaac to release a faerie trapped in a glass ball of light, he believes he's struck gold--in the form of wishes. All he has to do is mention the name that was engraved on the ball, and the indebted faerie would grant him any three wishes he wanted.
The best part of all was knowing that there was an entire chest of captured faeries waiting to be freed...
But when strange things start to happen around town, Isaac begins to wonder if the increasingly unfortunate events are his doing.
Only his mysterious neighbor, Yara, knows the truth about his lineage as a Light Keeper.
Can Yara's strength and wisdom guide Isaac into his new role?
Can Isaac make things right again?
Or will his dream-come-true turn into his worst nightmare?
Meet the Characters
Isaac Hale, Light Keeper
Isaac is your typical 12-year-old seventh grade student. All he cares about is playing video games and hanging out with his friends. When cleaning the attic one weekend, he comes across a mysterious locked trunk and after finding the key, he accidentally releases a faerie named Cristo from a glass ball he found inside. When Cristo offers to do any three tasks that Isaac desires, he knows its his lucky day.
Isaac's good luck continues when he realizes he can release more faeries and they'll all do almost whatever he wants. Some might say he was selfish but Isaac was only ever concerned with having a good time.
After meeting Yara and learning he will have to recapture the faeries he set free Isaac fights back against his new role as a Light Keeper until he can't deny it anymore. Can this selfish and lazy boy with a penchant for lying become the hero his town needs? Or will the faeries take over?
Yara, Guardian
All Yara has ever wanted was to the best Guardian she could be. She studied diligently under her mother, learning everything possible, until her mom grew ill. Once Yara realizes a Light Keeper needs her help, she can't believe she's stuck with Isaac. He's argumentative, impulsive, and won't take responsibility. How can she help turn someone like that into a hero capable of putting away dangerous faeries? Yara is tenacious and unwilling to give up. Where Isaac falls short, she steps in to take care of it herself.
Yara can always be found with her nose in a book or jotting down notes. While a part of her misses the childhood she never got of playing and going to school with other kids, she wouldn't trade her role as Guardian for anything.
Cristo, Brownie-type faerie
Cristo may appear to be an intimidating figure, but don't let that fool you. He cares about his family more than anything in any world and he won't let anything stop him from getting back to them.
Cristo is big on manners and enjoys conversation, but never lets on very much about how he came to be trapped in the chest. Isaac almost feels bad for the faerie after learning how many decades he'd been locked up. He wastes little time in issuing tasks for Cristo to complete so the faerie will be free to return to his family. When Isaac spots Cristo at the mall a couple of weeks later, he senses maybe the faerie wasn't everything he claimed to be.
Jess & Jay, Best Friends
Jess and Jay are Isaac's best friends since they were five. They enjoy a good joke, riding scooters with Isaac, and playing video games. Everything is about fun with them. When Isaac becomes more flaky and secretive, they begin to feel left out, but only because there's one truth they've never shared with their best friend.
Ms. Blankenship, History Teacher
Isaac's favorite school subject is history and no one teaches it better than Ms. Blankenship. After releasing Cristo, Isaac notices his favorite teacher treating him strangely and he doesn't know why. There is more to this teacher than meets the eye and when faeries begin to run amuck in town, Isaac will learn just why she's so good at teaching history.
